Sonam Wangchuck warns of agitation from September 19 to 24 if we don't get assurances from govt

Ladakh activist Sonam Wangchuk expressed disappointment over the meeting of leaders of Leh and Kargil held in Delhi on Wednesday. Wangchuk said that if there is no concrete assurance from the government on the Ladakh issue, they will agitate again from September 19 to 24. In a conversation with Bhaskar, he said, "We have faith in the government, so we come to talk to the government every time. Hopefully, this trust will not be broken." Wangchuk said that the meeting in Delhi was held in a very good atmosphere but nothing came out of it. The decisions that were taken four months ago were repeated. No new proposal came and the government did not give any clear answer to the demands of Ladakh. Earlier, he wrote on X- Today we are reminded of the meetings of the famous comedian Jaspal Bhatti. As we had guessed, this meeting on September 9 seems to be just a misleading move to divert the attention of Ladakh from the Greater Leh to Kargil Padyatra march starting from September 10. Unfortunately, trust is waning and distrust is growing. In September 2025, violence erupted during the agitation and Sonam Wangchuck had agitated in September 2025 demanding statehood for Ladakh. Meanwhile, violence broke out in Leh on September 24. In these protests, 4 people were killed and 90 people were injured. Wangchuk was taken into custody under the National Security Act (NSA) on September 26, two days after the violence. He was immediately shifted to Jodhpur. He was in Jodhpur jail for 170 days. He was released on March 14. Wangchuk was born in Ladakh, pursued mechanical engineering from Srinagar Wangchuk was born in 1966 in Ladakh, near Alchi in Leh district. Due to the lack of a school in his village, he did not get admission in any school till the age of 9. During this time, his mother gave him basic education. At the age of 9, he was taken to Srinagar and enrolled in a school there. Later he also studied at Special Kendriya School in Delhi. Later, he did his BTech in Mechanical Engineering from the National Institute of Technology i.e. NIT, Srinagar.
