In Vadodara city, a living example of how the work is done in the name of pre-monsoon operations amidst the claims of a smart city, has been seen on Sun Pharma Road. Here, a truck carrying a very heavy quantity of paver blocks was coming from Surat towards Vadodara. While passing through Sun Pharma Road, the road suddenly sat like a palace of cards from the side of the road. As the road collapsed, the rear and side tyres of the truck were buried deep in the ground and the accident occurred as the truck tilted one-sided.
The lifespan of the road, which was built at a cost of crores of rupees, was only a few days
According to local residents, the administration had carried out a new carpeting or pre-monsoon repair work on the road a few days ago. On normal days, or when the monsoon has just begun, if the road is not able to bear the weight of a heavy vehicle, it is understandable what kind of inferior quality material the contractor must have used. The lower part of the truck was severely damaged due to the road jump.
Hydra failure, traffic jam situation
As soon as the incident was reported, the driver of the truck took the help of a huge Hydra crane to pull out the vehicle with the help of locals. However, the weight of the block in the truck was so heavy and the road was so slippery from the inside that the truck could not be pulled out for a long time despite great efforts. The incident led to scenes of heavy traffic jams on Sun Pharma Road as a one-way-like situation was created. There has been a lot of anger among the local residents and motorists against the contractor who built the road and the Vadodara Municipal Corporation (VMC) and there is a demand for a strict probe into the matter.
