A 75-year-old man living in Gota area of Ahmedabad has been duped of Rs 1.43 crore by cyber gangsters posing as TRAI and CBI officials. The gangsters misused the elderly man's documents to commit the fraud fearing his involvement in money laundering and sending obscene videos. The victim lodged a complaint at the cyber crime police station and an investigation has been initiated. What is the whole incident?
On April 2, the elderly man received a call in the name of TRAI, stating that a mobile number was registered in Mumbai on his documents from which obscene videos were being sent to women. Later, a man identified himself as 'Vijay Khanna', the investigation officer of Mumbai Cyber Crime, made a video call. He hid his face under the pretext of protocol and showed only the logo of the agency and his Aadhaar card and ATM card details to intimidate the old man. He also sent arrest orders and fake court letters.
The gangsters threatened the elderly man by saying that his Canara Bank card was among the 247 ATM cards seized in Naresh Goyal's money laundering case. In this case, he falsely claimed that he had received 10 per cent commission for the transaction of Rs 2 crore and threatened to arrest him. Out of fear, the old man gave all the details of his stock market and bank account. The cyber gangsters had transferred a total of Rs 1.43 crore from the elderly man saying that he would have to sell the shares. Eight days later, the elderly man lost contact with the gangsters and informed his nephew's son, revealing that he was a victim of digital arrest. At present, the Cyber Crime Department is investigating to get to the root of this big fraud.
