The Gir Panthak in Saurashtra, which is considered to be the pride of Gujarat and the last abode of Asiatic lions, has now raised serious questions about the protection of lions. After the railway tracks, the national highway now seems to be proving to be a 'death trap' for lions. Recently, a video of a male lion roaming on a highway bridge near Nageshree and Mithapur in Jafrabad taluka on the Bhavnagar-Somnath national highway has gone viral on social media. What is the whole incident? In the incident that took place late at night, a giant Nar Singh climbed the Nageshree Bridge in Jafrabad. The lion roamed the highway fearlessly and reached Mithapur village. In the meantime, motorists passing by on the highway captured these scenes on camera. This kind of movement of lions on the highway can prove to be extremely dangerous not only for lions but also for motorists. This is not the first incident. Earlier, two lions were killed by an unknown vehicle on the same highway. In all, 3 wildlife vehicles have lost their lives in the last few days. Though Amreli district has the highest population of lions, there is a lack of fencing around the highway or an underpass for wildlife to pass through. However, due to the High Court's verdict and joint patrolling by the Forest Department-Railways, the number of accidents has come down there. But now it seems that the danger has shifted from the railway tracks to the national highway. Despite repeated sightings of lions on the highway, no concrete action is being taken by the forest department or the state government. Local wildlife lovers said it was a matter of joy that the lion population was growing, but it was now imperative to intensify speed breakers, sign boards and night patrolling on the highways for their safety. Locals and environmentalists have been demanding from the government and the forest department: If awareness is not shown in time, it is feared that this pride of Gujarat will soon be limited to videos and pictures on social media. A lion died after falling into a well in Kankot village of Liliya diocese of Amreli district a month ago. The incident took place in a well constructed by the forest department in the border area.
