City Anchor: Monorail, which has been closed for ten months, is ready to run back on track soon

The monorail which has been closed for the last ten months is set to run again. However, instead of just starting a monorail, a strategy has been devised to make it more useful for commuters by providing an effective connection between the metro and suburban locals. At Chembur, work on connectivity with Metro-2B and Central Railway station is in the final stages. After its completion, the entire monorail route will be opened for tourists simultaneously. So it looks like a combination of metro-monos will be done for the convenience of the passengers. The monorail service has been closed since September 20, 2025. Before the closure, about 18,000 tourists used the service every day. However, low passenger numbers and frequent technical glitches made the service difficult. Therefore, the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) has laid emphasis on increasing the utility of the monorail by effectively linking it with the city's public transport system. Instead of rushing to start the monorail, it is important to make the necessary connections so that tourists can easily reach the mono first. Instead of starting the monorail in a phased manner, the entire route will be operated simultaneously. The authority expects that once the monorail is fully operational, the commuters will be benefited in the true sense and more tourists will come to this service. At Chembur, a connector connecting Metro-2B, Central Railway and Mono Rail is being established. Therefore, the system of movement from one place to another can be easily changed. This will benefit commuters of all three services – metro, local and monorail, a senior MMRDA official said. The Mankhurd phase of Metro-2B has started from Diamond Garden. The Chembur section from Diamond Garden is also fully ready. With the metro running up to Chembur in the next few days, the resumption of the monorail will also be accelerated. Necessary approval obtained The final safety clearance has been received from the CMRS (Commissioner of Metro Rail Safety) for the operation of the monorail. So all the mandatory approvals required to restart the monorail have now been obtained. The technical system, security system and functionality of the train are being checked before the monorail is reopened for tourists. MMRDA is trying to revive the monorail on the strength of the tri-Sutra, which is connectivity with the metro, simultaneous service on the entire route and a fleet of 18 coaches. Successful enforcement is expected to reinforce the monorail's position in Mumbai's public transport system.
