The holy month of Shravan is approaching in Hinduism. Then there is an atmosphere of devotion to Shiva. The Kanwar Yatra carries a special significance in this holy month. As part of this tradition, groups of Kavada pilgrims from Vadodara city and district are thronging Chandod, a pilgrimage site known as Dakshin Prayag, to fetch the water of the holy Lokmata Narmada river.
In Vadodara, a group of Shiva devotees associated with the transport business have organized a grand Kanwar Yatra for the 19th consecutive year. Originally from Rajasthan and Haryana and settled in Vadodara for years, these Shiva devotees have been organizing this pilgrimage continuously since 2008. This transport association has always been at the forefront not only in business but also in social and religious activities.
Around 125 Kanwar pilgrims had reached Chandod with faith and enthusiasm before the onset of the month of Sawan. Early this morning, pilgrims took a dip in the holy Narmada river on the banks of the famous Malharrao Ghat in Chandod. Later, a formal puja was performed and Shriphal was offered to Narmadaji. With reverence, these Shiva devotees started on foot from Chandod to Motanath Mahadev at Vadodara Harni after filling the holy water of Narmada in the Kanvad. According to Madan Lal Sharma, the organiser of the yatra, the yatra will halt at Dabhoi tonight. The conglomerate will then reach Vadodara on Monday night. Next Tuesday, On August 11, on the auspicious day of Shivratri in the month of Shravana, all these Kavadyatris will perform Jalabhishek at Motanath Mahadev in Harni with the holy water of Narmada and pray to Lord Shiva for the welfare of the world.
