5 kg of hydroponic ganja seized at Ahmedabad airport: Youth arrested on flight from Bangkok, 5 packets wrapped in black plastic found in trolley bag

The Air Intelligence Unit (AIU) of the Customs Department has busted a major drug smuggling racket at the Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International (SVPI) Airport in Ahmedabad. A quantity of 5.368 kg (gross weight) of hydroponic marijuana (ganja) was seized from a male passenger who landed in Ahmedabad by a flight from Bangkok. The Customs Department has seized a consignment of banned drugs and arrested an international smuggler. Watch at airports based on passenger profiling According to official sources in the customs department, officials of the Air Intelligence Unit had set up a watch at the airport after they got specific suspicion based on passenger profiling. Meanwhile, on 8th July 2026 a male passenger who had landed at Ahmedabad Airport by Thai Airways Flight No. TG-343 from Bangkok was intercepted on suspicion. 5 packets wrapped in black plastic found in trolley bag Objectionable items were found in his check-in trolley bag when the officers launched an intensive check of the luggage of this suspected passenger. The accused had cleverly wrapped the drugs in black coloured polythene (plastic) to evade scanning and investigation. A total of 5 such packets were recovered from the bag. The customs team immediately checked using the Field Test Kit to confirm the suspected narcotics, and found that the quantity was of high quality 'hydroponic marijuana' (ganja). The total gross weight of the seized contraband drugs has been reported to be 5.368 kg. Offence registered under NDPS Act The consignment of drugs worth crores of rupees has been seized by the Customs Department under various provisions of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, 1985. The passenger involved in the crime has been arrested on the spot. Further intensive investigations are being carried out by the agencies to ascertain how far the ends of this international drug network are connected and to whom the consignment was to be delivered in Ahmedabad.
