Gujarat HC scraps I-T notice sent 5 years after woman’s death

The Gujarat High Court quashed an income tax department notice issued to a deceased woman. The notice sought to reopen her tax assessment five years after her passing. The department claimed her land valuation was overstated based on a different sale instance. The court found the department wrongly invoked a specific tax provision for this case. The validity of proceedings against a dead person was left open for future consideration.
